Losing a key member isn’t easy for any band. Especially a quartet. And especially an all-star ensemble like the smooth jazz “supergroup” Fourplay.
But after guitarists Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton, keyboardist Bob James says Fourplay’s third man in the spot, Chuck Loeb, has been the charm.

To Friends and Fans of Jeff Golub
As most of you know, Jeff has been going through an unbelievable struggle with losing his sight. However, two specialists have given us hope that something can still be done to help reverse this situation. This requires extensive testing which Jeff is undergoing as we speak. These tests are vital to continuing the search for a solution, but they’re also expensive. I’m hoping that all of you will take a moment to consider helping out. We’ve set up the Jeff Golub Medical Expenses account for that purpose. Any donation would go a long way to help cover the costs of Jeff finding sight again.

The music begins in the Hollywood Bowl this weekend for the super-group Fourplay and then heads to the vineyards.
Fourplay is part of Saturday’s lineup for the 2011 Playboy Jazz Festival and is also returning to Thornton Winery on Sunday.
Both engagements are special, drummer Harvey Mason said in a phone interview.
“It’s probably the largest festival we play during the year,” he said of the jazz festival. The Hollywood Bowl is so organized, and the people just love it there. You have a real party. It’s a great time there … it’s a real serious buzz.”

Like many jazz fans, Chuck Loeb has been a fan of Fourplay for a long time; but unlike most, he is now a part of the band.
“I was definitely eager to join the band, having been a fan of the band from the beginning,” said Loeb. “It’s a really good moment for me as the focus on my own career was changing, and this left the door open to pursue two different areas, to keep me challenged.
The superstar group, consisting of Bob James, Harvey Mason and Nathan East, will perform Sunday at Thornton Winery as part of the 2011 Champagne Jazz Concert Series.

“By embracing change while staying true to its mission, Fourplay continues into its third decade as one of contemporary jazz’s finest ensembles.”
Jazziz
“Fourplay may not have invented smooth jazz, but it remains the class of the field, always pushing the idiom forward in both its jazz and pop directions. The quartet’s fine 11th outing is sparked by new guitarist Chuck Loeb, who melds seamlessly with the group’s signature sonic palette and superior writing and arranging.”
